Ultra-Orthodox Jews are not required to perform military service in Israel, and the issue is subject to intense debate following the country’s election last week. Here, ultra-Orthodox men sign up for alternate civilian service earlier this month. The rise of a new Israeli political party after last week’s elections has set the stage for renewed conflict over the country’s military draft. That new party, Yesh Atid, or “There is a Future,” campaigned on a promise to draft thousands of ultra-Orthodox students who are currently exempt from military service.

Israel’s president is consulting representatives of political parties to decide who will lead the country’s next coalition government. Wednesday’s consultations began after President Shimon Peres received the official results of last week’s parliamentary election. After talks with all 12 parties elected to parliament, Peres will ask the leader best positioned to form a coalition to be the next prime minister. Peres is almost certain to tap the current prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to try to form a new government. Political newcomer Yair Lapid, whose party finished second, said he will not seek the post. Peres was meeting representatives from Netanyahu’s and Lapid’s parties on Wednesday. Meetings with smaller parties are scheduled for Thursday. The premier-designate has up to six weeks to form a coalition government.

It can be found in March 1982 during the days prior to the Falklands War, after Argentina developed an unauthorized presence on Britain’s South Georgia island amidst broach a possible attack of the Falklands, long held by Britain. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher understood there was little that Britain could possibly do immediately to develop firm control of the contested islands, and feared Britain would be viewed as a paper tiger that could possibly not defend even its diminished empire.
